This series contains correspondence, narrative and statistical medical reports, facility drawings and photographs. Correspondence is received and sent by the District Medical Directors stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico and, later Phoenix, Arizona. Correspondents include the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, the Directors of Health, agency superintendents, agency physicians, nurses and field matrons, and special physicians for trachoma and tuberculosis. Subjects include the disbursements of funds, including the purchase of equipment and supplies and the construction, improvement and maintenance of hospital buildings; health and sanitary conditions and health education; medical and dental care, the hospitalization of patients, and the treatment of diseases such as meningitis, trachoma and tuberculosis; recruitment and evaluation of medical personnel, quarters for employees, and inspections of facilities and investigations of complaints against staff. Also included are staff meetings for the Navajo Medical Center (1939-1945). Agencies and medical facilities represented in the correspondence include the following: from Arizona, the Colorado River Agency, the Fort Apache Agency, the Hopi Agency, the Navajo Agency, Navajo Medical Center and the Kayenta and Winslow (Navajo-Hopi) Sanatoriums, the Pima Indian Agency, the San Carlos Agency, the Sells Agency and San Xavier Sanatorium, the Truxton Canon Agency, and the Phoenix Indian School (including the Camp Verde, Salt River and Fort McDowell Indian Reservations), and the Phoenix Sanatorium (also known as East Farms Sanatorium); from California, the Mission Agency, including the Soboba Indian Hospital, and the Sherman Institute; from Colorado, the Consolidated Ute Agency; from New Mexico: the Jicarilla Agency and Jicarilla Sanitorium, the Mescalero Agency, the United Pueblos Agency, the Santa Fe and Albuquerque Indian Schools, the Albuquerque Sanatorium, the Charles H. Burke School Hospital; and from Utah, the Uintah and Ouray Agency.
